TikTok, an online video-sharing platform, has become the most popular online shopping platform among Thais aged up to 29, according to a survey conducted by the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO). The survey was conducted among 4,699 respondents throughout the country. The platform has gained popularity as an online commerce platform among the youth, as it emphasizes happiness and entertainment, so-called “Shoppertainment”, through live streams and short videos created by users and influencers.

Businesses say TikTok and Facebook are helping achieve billions of dong (VND1 billion = $40,363) in sales and becoming more efficient than traditional retail channels. Speaking at a conference on March 16 Trang Le, CEO of media firm MultiMedia, said her company thrived even during the Covid-19 pandemic by producing content on Facebook and TikTok. Television was previously the firm’s main channel for attracting viewers and production costs were high, she said. With the recent emergence of Facebook and TikTok, her company has been creating content and attracting millions of users at a lower cost.

Nearly VND800 billion (US$31.6 million) worth of goods were sold every day on the top five e-commerce platforms in the first half of this year. Sales on Shopee, Lazada, Tiki, Sendo, and Tiktok Shop totaled VND143.9 trillion, a 54.91% rise from a year ago, according to a report by e-commerce data tracker Metric. TikTok Shop and Shopee saw sales increase by 150.5% and 65.9%. The other sites also had double-digit growth. The report noted: “Most households are tightening their belts amid uncertainties in the economy. Therefore, consumers prioritize affordable products that suit their budget.”

Temu, along with Shopee, Lazada and TikTok, is flooding Vietnam with low-priced Chinese goods, and local sellers are suffering, unable to compete on price. Some countries have are trying to prevent this influx of Chinese goods. Temu was banned in Indonesia earlier this month, and is facing increasing scrutiny in the E.U. and the U.S. The European Commission is considering imposing import duties on goods valued under EUR150 ($163). Last month Washington announced measures to close a loophole that allowed tax-free import of items valued at under $800.
